It could be handy if ft_prepare_layout would do an error check on identical channel locations, as these often cause errors in subsequent plotting functions (or any other function that uses layout would be broken in a sense I guess).

I don't think that it breaks anything. Please provide an example that it is broken, otehrwise there is nothing to fix. If nothing is broken, then we still might want to add a warning to ft_prepare_layout
