I would strongly suggest to enhance/change warning_once such that it takes into account the high-level ft_ function it is stemming from. My motivation is that I am really annoyed by the new 'output frequencies are different' warning for every single trial, spamming my command window. In my private copy, I replaced it by warning_once. However, now the warning only pops up every once in a while, which makes this warning look totally arbitrary. Most consistent would be if the warning would be thrown once per call to ft_freqanalysis - this would reduce annoyance but still indicate that this warning is of high importance. Note that the warning_once call is in ft_specest_mtmfft, and I would argue for the function checking the highest available ft_* function (so here, ft_freqanalysis). To handle this, something like an ft_preamble script might be necessary to reset warning_once.
Joscha Schmiedt - 2013-05-02 14:11:17 +0200
I agree. Also, having to print the warning for each trial can tremendously slow down computation, for example when only analyzing two frequencies for 20,000 trials.
Eelke Spaak - 2013-05-15 14:01:42 +0200
suggestion: reimplement warning_once using the stack trace, i.e. in a for loop it is once, at multiple l;ocations it warns multiple times. In one of the preambles "clear warning_once" can be done to reset it. important is top make a good test script/function with subfunctions.
Jörn M. Horschig - 2013-05-22 10:53:48 +0200
if ft_functionA calls warning_once in a for-loop it is clear that the warning should occur once. At the end of ft_functionA, ft_preamble should take care of resetting warning_once. However, we need to make sure that this reset it only partial. Here an example why: Let's say we have two warnings w1 and w2, and two functions, ft_functionA and ft_functionB. ft_functionA is looping over something and throwing warning w1 in this loop, and then calling ft_functionB for each iteration. ft_functionB is throwing warning w2 for each call. Using the stacktrace I can unambigously determine what function wants to throw what warning, however, at the end of ft_functionB, ft_preamble will be called, which resets/clears warning_once. Thus, in every loop-iteration, ft_functionB clears warning_once, thereby causing ft_functionA to throw warning w1 again. This is something we do not want, hence we need a way to tell warning_once to clear a single warning or all warnings in a particular set of subsequent function calls. Thus, we need something like warning_once('-clear'). In our particular example, ft_functionB would call ft_preamble, which then calls warning_once('-clear'). warning_once('-clear') then checks the current stack trace, would find ft_functionA->ft_functionB and removes all warnings that were thrown in ft_functionB and preceeded by ft_functionA. It would keep warnings thrown in functionA. Does all this make sense or am I overlooking something crucial?
Robert Oostenveld - 2013-05-22 11:11:26 +0200
(In reply to comment #3) sounds like a plan to me, albeit rather complex. Does it ever happen that a high-level ft_functionA calls high-level ft_functionB within a for loop? I cannot think of one. The preambles/clears only happen at the high level, not at lower levels. If high-level functions are not in for loops, the problem of clearing too often is not as severe.
Jörn M. Horschig - 2013-05-22 15:44:14 +0200
http://code.google.com/p/fieldtrip/source/browse/trunk/ft_clusterplot.m does, and in principle the modular architecture allows for that. So, I think it would be cleaner to make it prone to these kind of errors. The way I was thinking about is that previous warnings are now stored in the previous variable. In the example case I gave we would have: previous.ft_functionA.w1 = ... When ft_functionB calls warning_once this gets extended: previous.ft_functionA.w1 = ...; previous.ft_functionA.ft_functionB.w2 = ...; Upon clearing in ft_functionB, thus a call to warning_once('-clear'), we would check the stack trace and see that we are in ft_functionA.ft_functionB and then remove the whole field previous.functionA.functionB, but keep the rest of previous.ft_functionA untouched. When ft_functionA ends, it would clear previous.ft_functionA. The advantage of having these subfields is that also lower-level functions that have thrown warnings in ft_functionA will be thrown away without having to think about some string-matching loop. E.g. previous.ft_functionA.low_level_function will be removed as well. The code is a bit less-readable because of the subfield stuff, because I have to use lots of eval statements like eval(['previous.' fname ' = []']) to make previous.ft_functionA.ft_functionB = [] possible, but since this is a low-level function I favoured this over making it more readable but redundant. Didn't commit yet, still testing whether this works fine without problems.
Jörn M. Horschig - 2013-05-23 10:04:19 +0200
should this warning_once clearing go into one of the existing preamble scripts or should I create a new one?
Robert Oostenveld - 2013-05-23 10:41:15 +0200
(In reply to comment #6) I suggest to replace ft_preamble help with ft_preamble init and include the help and warning-once-clear into a single script. The idea of the preamble was to reduce code clutter in the main functions, so we should try to merge where possible. mac001> grep -l 'ft_preamble help' ft_*.m shows almost all functions. mac001> grep -L 'ft_preamble help' ft_*.m shows only a few (see below) that subsequently would not get it: ft_channelcombination.m ft_channelselection.m -> should be moved to utilities anyway ft_defaults.m -> no problem ft_dependencycheck.m ft_documentationindex.m ft_documentationreference.m -> go together for maintenance ft_statistics_analytic.m ft_statistics_crossvalidate.m ft_statistics_montecarlo.m ft_statistics_stats.m -> no problem ft_compile_mex.m ft_wizard.m -> are a bit unusual but can live without the warning-once-clear So only the ones with the help preamble need it.
Jörn M. Horschig - 2013-05-23 13:11:13 +0200
narghs, okay, so the next problem is that due to multiple copies of warning_once, Matlab creates a new persistent variable per copy. The only solution I can think of is to rename the variable (because previous is too common) to ft_previous_warnings and make it global - if you disagree, let me know whoops, and while testing this I realized that deleting ft_preamble_help wasn't a smart move, my torque-jobs just crashed :/ well, seems like I should get this here done asap ^^

(In reply to comment #10) Hi Robert, of course you get an error, because the function is not written to be called outside other functions (ie from the command line): without a stacktrace, the subfields cannot be generated. However, within functions and via ft_preamble init, it all works fine on my machine and on those of others as tested by Johanna and Diego (and also, all Donders people would have complained on Friday if something would have been severly broken). Although reverting helps temporarily to get the test scripts running again(although a warning_once('-clear') is triggered now every once in a while), it is rather strange that the function does not work for our test suite while it does outside. I will have to look deeper into why the function breaks for our test scripts. Do you know what Matlab version the test scripts are running? I can only imagine that 'evalc' is not fully backwards compatible.

I am getting this warning, which seems to me a mistake: Warning: -clear > In utilities/private/warning_once at 116 In utilities/private/ft_preamble_init at 26 In ft_preamble at 54 In ft_freqgrandaverage at 59
Robert Oostenveld - 2013-05-28 09:35:51 +0200
(In reply to comment #16) I suppose that I only reverted the warning_once, not the function in which it is called/cleared.
Jörn M. Horschig - 2013-05-29 16:33:48 +0200
I reworked warning_once, but I won't commit before the evaluation is over (and because I probably won't be at the Donders the next two days to fix bugs). I will commit on Monday earliest. What has changed is that instead of individual global variables, warning_once now uses the global ft_default variable and creates a subfield ft_default.warning. Further, instead of evalc or eval to set/retrieve subfields the functions uses the utility-functions setsubfield, getsubfield and rmsubfield. I will check some more test scripts before committing and then hope that xunit does not complaint :)
Eelke Spaak - 2013-05-29 16:46:00 +0200
An idea I had: could it be that the xunit functions have some symbol in their function name which is an invalid character for structure field names? That might explain the stuff failing during automated testing (i.e. the stack trace contains invalid symbols in that case), and not at other times. Not sure this is the solution, just a thought.
Jörn M. Horschig - 2013-05-29 16:51:08 +0200
hm, very good point. if that would be the case, the function will fail also in the new version. actually, I thought about extending the 'decomma' function to remove all special characters, but then I thought 'who the hell is using <./:"{}\]@#^%$^_)#$^% in a function name anyway?' a thing to keep in mind if it fails...
Eelke Spaak - 2013-06-04 16:04:15 +0200
The warning: -clear remarks were starting to annoy me, so I have commented out (and committed in r8184) the call in ft_preamble_init.
Jörn M. Horschig - 2013-06-04 16:17:22 +0200
see, I am not the only one who gets annoyed by mass warnings :) in the meanwhile, I created a test_xunit_stacktrace function. Surprisingly, the stacktrace seems to be field-able for matlab, with the old and the new way used by warning_once. I also copied the new warning_once function into that test function, and it did not crash thus far: http://fieldtrip.fcdonders.nl/development/dashboard/r8183/test_xunit_stacktest I got an experiment now, but I'll commit tomorrow

I am confused, all *subfield functions like issubfield, rmsubfield, etc, should they be private functions? They are in FieldTrip/utilities/ and otherwise in a bunch of ../private/ directories Right now I am even considering making them subfunctions of warning_once...

Jörn M. Horschig - 2013-06-11 15:04:12 +0200
I saw that ft_spike_XXX started to fail because 'field cfg.warning is not allowed' as checked by ft_checkconfig. I assume that is related to warning_once, because I use global ft_default.warning as a field. Due to trackconfig, this ends up as a field of the cfg. Is it alright if ft_preamble_trackconfig temporarily removes the warning field from ft_default, then tracks the cfg, and then copies it back to ft_default?
Jörn M. Horschig - 2013-06-11 15:12:10 +0200
whoops, that won't work because ft_checkconfig will call mergeconfig(cfg, ft_default) before checking for allowed fields... hmm... any idea how to most elegantly solve this?
Jörn M. Horschig - 2013-06-11 15:15:58 +0200
added Martin Vinck, so that he knows what has changed. @Martin: I changed warning_once to throw warnings not every XX seconds, but per stacktrace appearance. I made this, however, by adding a field to ft_default called warning. This causes the spike functions to crash, because they track the user-config. The latest two comments are about this, you can ignore the rest of this bug discussion. I thought I add you because I broke your functions, and now you know why :)
Martin Vinck - 2013-06-11 15:20:01 +0200
(In reply to comment #32) Jorn, which spike functions does it exactly break? And it breaks because of the cfg.allowed thing? So one just has to add cfg.warning in those allowed fields?
Martin Vinck - 2013-06-11 15:21:16 +0200
(In reply to comment #33) sorry, not the cfg.allowed, but the checkconfig on allowed fields (I have added this because I believe it is good practice to check whether there are inputs that are not allowed, to avoid user typos which can cause unexpected function behavior)
Jörn M. Horschig - 2013-06-11 15:31:01 +0200
Hi Martin, thanks for the fast response. Yes, it is because of the limited allowed-fields, and it would work if 'warning' is added. I am not sure whether that is an elegant solution though, because 'warning' is not a configuration-field per se, it is more a container of already thrown warnings that can be checked to not throw that warning again. So I was thinking of a way that 'warning' does not end up in the cfg. Adding warning as an allowed field is a solution, but I'll keep on thinking if there is a better one. It might be wise to add 'warning' as an allowed field temporarily though, so that tomorrows FT version will contain usable ft_spike_XXX functions
Martin Vinck - 2013-06-11 15:32:51 +0200
(In reply to comment #35) hi Jorn ok, when is tomorrow's FT version released (so how much time do I have?)

Martin Vinck - 2013-06-11 15:44:31 +0200
(In reply to comment #37) that should work.
Jörn M. Horschig - 2013-06-12 15:52:59 +0200
as discussed in todays meeting, warnings warned for once are now deleted from ft_default.warning once a high-level function ends. This assures that data.cfg.warning does not contain warnings that have been thrown in other ft_XXX functions rather than the one that has directly been called to create/modify the data structure (i.e. data.cfg.warning does not contain information from data.cfg.warning.previous): http://code.google.com/p/fieldtrip/source/detail?r=8241 http://code.google.com/p/fieldtrip/source/detail?r=8243 it still has be discussed whether trackconfig should merge the used-cfg with ft_default settings. for that, I created bug 2196. Martin, I saw your commit, thanks! We will keep it like that for the time being, and discuss if the warning field (and other global settings) should end up in the config or not in bug 2196.
