Importantly, not occuring for 2012b, but occurring for 2015a (the once I tested) Possibly specific to the new graphics engine introduced in 2014b.

I am not sure what the issue is here. When I test is (matlab 2020b) the identified channel will be depicted in black with a thicker line. Since it's unclear what the issue is here, and moreover was reported on matlab versions that we currently officially do not support anymore w.r.t. backward compatibility, I suggest to change status to WONTFIX
