(following the discussion with Stefan and Markus) Instead of calling a seperate function to poll, it should be added to the ft_read_data options, e.g. dat = ft_read_data('buffer://xxx', ..., 'timeout', 5) to wait for a maxiumum of 5 seconds to get the data, or dat = ft_read_data('buffer://xxx', ..., 'timeout', inf) to wait infinitely long until the requested samples are available.
