ft_topoplotER checks for the deprecated 'xparam' in the beginning but sets itself 'cfg.xparam'. Then it calls itself like in line 453 (FT version 20110919). This is mainly a nuisance, but could cause trouble in future.

Hi Till, Thanks for notifying. I noticed this also, and removed the occurrence of cfg.xparam/yparam altogether. This led to some unexpected behaviour indeed (see bug 996), but that now also should be fixed.
